Advice For Beginner Motorcyclists

Learning to ride a motorcycle is much different to learning how to drive a car and many people may find it daunting. As with trying to learn anything new, there are many aspects of riding a motorcycle that can take you a while to get the hang of.

However, there are several tips that can keep you on the right track and ensure that you build good habits straight away so you can ride your motorcycle safely and happily as soon as possible.

There is a lot to remember and it will still take time and practice to get to grips with everything, however staying safe, aware and comfortable when riding is the most important step.

First is ensuring you are seated firmly and your feet are placed correctly. If you have never ridden on a motorcycle before, getting your posture just right may take a while.

This is key though as it helps you stay safely sat on the bike as well as giving you control over your movements and actions. Keep your feet firmly planted on the foot pegs and keep them close to the bike. This will give you more control and can help you feel much safer when riding.

Next is to practise turning. Turning left or right in a car or any other vehicle is straightforward and relatively easy, however, it can be very difficult to get it just right on a bike.

Turning requires you to lean and use your body weight to ensure the bike can safely make the turn. The angle at which you lean and the speed that you take the turn will differ depending on how sharp the bend is, so practising a variety of different turns will help you become a better judge of this.

You will also want to get into the habit of checking your bike thoroughly both before and after riding it to ensure it is in full working order and everything is as it should be. This can help to highlight any issues as soon as possible so you don’t encounter any nasty surprises while riding.
