Did A Single Song Change The Motorcycling World Forever?

One question that a motorcycle driving school is often asked by people who are at the very start of their riding journey is regarding the best motorcycle to learn on.

Whilst there will be preferences for the best bike to own depending on the particular needs of the rider, the best bike to learn on is one which is the most intuitive, fast but not so fast as to be uncontrollable, affordable and easy to handle.

For over six decades that bike has often been the Honda Super Cub , the most widely sold motor vehicle in history. A big reason for that is the result of a song that managed to fundamentally change biking culture.

Prior to 1964, motorcycles were typically perceived by the general public as being only for “bikers”, who were stereotyped as outlaws. It was a hobby and a dedication rather than a vehicle.

The Super Cub changed this partly through its ease of use, partly because most of its components were hidden behind the bodywork, but also thanks to some of the most fortunate timing in marketing history.

In 1964, Brian Wilson and Mike Love of the Beach Boys released the song Little Honda . Despite turning out to be one of the most effective advertising jingles in history, it was not paid for by Honda and just happened to be released at the same time as Honda’s “nicest people” campaign.

Proclaiming that the Honda Super Cub was “not a big motorcycle” but instead was simply a “groovy little motorbike”, it solidified that motorcycling was not exclusively for hobbyists but for everyone, and sales skyrocketed when the song was covered by manufactured band The Hondells .

The Hondells released a follow-up song which was used by Honda in advertising called “You Meet The Nicest People On A Honda Bike”, which provided a warm welcome to anyone who wanted to ride a bike.

Are Regulations For Motorcycle Tests And Training Changing?

The goal of a motorcycle driving school is ultimately to ensure that all riders are ready to ride on public highways safely and confidently, and the only way this is possible is through a strong testing regime focused on the safety standards needed in the real world.

Whilst there have been campaigns for years for changes to the motorcycle licensing framework, both the National Motorcyclists Council (NMC) and the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) have reported that the Department for Transport (DfT) is considering changes to the system.

A series of meetings with Lilian Greenwood MP , the Minister for the Future of Roads, have left both the NMC and MCIA confident that some significant changes are coming when it comes to motorcycle regulation, in order to ensure high standards of safety.

For the NMC, this is the culmination of a campaign that has lasted at least three years with concerns that date as far back as 2013.

The NMC published a series of proposals when it came to reforming the regulations surrounding the CBT.

These included implementing changes announced in 2017 that would have added a theory test and a hazard perception section to the test similar to a car driving license, and including provisions to have these tests undertaken online.

They also proposed that a CBT remains valid for two years, to be followed by a two-year CBT Plus if they do not get a full license within two years, followed finally by a test to get an AM or A1 license depending on the bike they are riding.

These points, alongside several extra points to reform the testing process, were first published in 2022, but with different people in charge of the Department for Transport, it seems far more possible that change could be on the horizon.

No report has been announced as yet, and how it will affect current CBT holders is also unknown. But it appears that change is coming sooner rather than later.

The Great Advantages Of Learning To Ride In Winter

Learning to ride a motorbike can be a wonderfully liberating experience, but the time you undertake training can make some difference to how you manage to handle different road conditions.

Undertaking a course in summer may make the whole thing easier, but starting before winter is over means you can learn a lot about how to handle issues like cold and slippery roads, poor visibility in mist and fog, as well as bad light.

There is plenty of expert advice out there on how to ride in winter and handle the extra perils that come from doing so. For instance, Motorcycle News once produced a large array of tips that can help riders deal with the season and its challenges.

Training to ride a motorbike involves being aware of all the potential dangers on the road. Doing it in winter means that by the time you have passed, you will be much more aware of these - and a safer rider as a result.

Will Electric Motorcycles Have Their Electric Car Moment?

Winter is a common time for reflection and making plans for the year ahead, which for many people involves learning to ride at a motorcycle driving school .

However, looking to the future also means looking at what future riders might be riding on, and the engines that might be driving them forward.

On four wheels, that future looks increasingly electric-powered , but are electric bikes necessarily going to be the future of riding in the same way?

Whilst the modern history of electric bikes begins at roughly the same time as the electric car with the Peugeot Scoot’elec from 1996 finding a successful niche and selling for a whole decade, they have not quite had the same big breakthrough moment that EVs have in recent years.

Despite some attempts, there has not been a Nissan Leaf-type breakthrough in the market, and the majority of electric bikes continue to be electrically assisted pedal cycles rather than motorbikes.

Part of the reason for this is range anxiety; motorcycles are often bought for long journeys travelling across a variety of beautiful roads and a variety of weather conditions, but at present, the battery life of many electric bikes is not enough for uses outside of urban commuting.

Adding more batteries is not an option in the same way it is for cars, as the extra weight can affect the handling in a way that can make a bike less safe to drive.

The charging infrastructure is improving for EVs across the board, but for people who own a motorcycle because they do not have the space for a car and a garage, getting a charging station fitted might be trickier than expected.

As well as this, battery life is heavily affected by the weather, and bikes tend to be more exposed to this due to their relatively small frames in comparison to cars.

However, they do benefit from far more consistent acceleration, very good handling and a much quieter ride, which means that once the capacity issue is rectified through better battery designs, they could have their big breakthrough.

Why Riders Must Still Steer Clear Of The Bus Lanes

If you are taking motorbike lessons in London , a key skill will be handling busy traffic, especially on main roads where the myriad of cars will be added to by lorries and London buses.

Given that buses, as larger vehicles, can pose more of a threat because they block the view, recent plans by the Department for Transport (DfT) to give motorcyclists default access to bus lanes across the country were welcomed by organisations like the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA).

However, despite a public consultation showing that 93 per cent of stakeholder organisations and 98 per cent of individual respondents backed the idea, the DfT has decided not to go ahead with the plans.

MCIA chief executive officer Tony Campbell said: “Today’s decision is as shocking as it is disappointing”.

He added: “It flies in the face of clear evidence and overwhelming public support. It contradicts years of work promoting PLVs as a sustainable transport solution.”

The disappointment expressed by the MCIA will not go away unless the government reconsiders the decision, but in the meantime, the key point for trainee motorcyclists is to learn all the skills required to ride in busy streets when they can’t use the bus lanes - except outside the times when they are in operation.

London’s buses have themselves been the subject of concerns, after a recent report was published by London Travel Watch highlighting that bus travel is becoming less popular, partly due to congestion that means buses proceed at an average speed of just nine miles an hour, dropping to less than seven in some central areas.

CEO of London Travel Watch Michael Roberts said that while ridership is now above pre-COVID levels, it is still less than a decade ago.

Such congestion can be a good reason for using a motorbike, as you can weave in and out of the traffic more easily than larger vehicles.

What Were Rotary Engine Motorcycles And Why Are They Not Used?

Whilst there are plenty of obvious differences between cars and motorbikes, something that becomes extremely clear when someone with a full car driving licence heads to a motorcycle driving school is just how fundamental these differences are.

It is not just the case that motorbikes have two fewer wheels, but that on a fundamental design and engineering basis cars and bikes are worlds apart.

This is often easiest to see when engineering decisions that work with cars and other vehicles are tried with motorbikes, with unusual results, to say the least.

One of the most notable examples of this was the extremely rare trend of the Wankel-engined motorbike and the somewhat infamous Suzuki RE5.

A Wankel rotary engine was at one point quite a popular type of engine for sports cars, as whilst it was unusually designed it was remarkably powerful for its size, although this typically came at the expense of low fuel economy.

It was most famously used by Mazda in sports cars such as the RX-8 but the concept seemed tailor-made for motorbikes, as the perfect engine would be light, smooth and tiny, with an exceptional power-to-weight ratio.

In the 1970s it was seen as the future, but ultimately very few Wankel-engined bikes were ever produced, the most infamous of which was Suzuki’s attempt in 1974, after two years of fraught development and testing.

Part of the problem was that whilst the engine itself was light and simple with its single rotary

system, the RE5 had an exceptionally complex engine to manage the extreme heat that the Wankel engine generated. This included both an oil-cooling and liquid-cooling system, as well as no less than three oil systems.

The complexity added a lot of weight, made it extremely unreliable and prone to failing after just a year, and when it did it ironically proved to be quite an expensive fix due to the fact in most instances the entire engine system needed to be replaced.

It only lasted two years on the market, and other proposed Wankel motorcycles were cancelled or discontinued as well.

How An Ambitious Attempt To Make A Friendly Bike Failed

A big question asked by motorcycling enthusiasts is how to introduce new people to the wonderful world of two wheels.

One of the best answers is consistency. A bike that can be piloted at a motorcycle driving school and is forgiving enough to allow for the teaching of how to ride safely and legally is essential.

Often this requires the use of a layout that is as standardised as possible, so if someone relies on muscle memory they are not going to end up in trouble.

Honda, on the other hand, despite having some very capable entry-level bikes, thought differently, and with that in mind set to develop a new concept for an easy-to-use bike that would make it even easier than before to learn and ride safely.

The Honda DN-01 (Dream New - Concept One) was not only a rare example of a motorbike with both anti-lock brakes and automatic transmission but had a gearless gearbox.

Instead, it had a continuously variable transmission (CVT), rather ambitiously described in Honda’s marketing as “ Human-Friendly Transmission ”.

A CVT means that a rider does not ever have to use the clutch or switch gears, and the design of the bike was an unusual crossover of a scooter, a cruiser and a sportbike.

The problem was that whilst it tried to be a jack-of-all-trades, it ended up failing at every single one of them.

It was not very comfortable for long rides, making it not very good as a cruiser, it lacked storage space and practicality, which meant that the type of commuters who would buy a scooter were unhappy, and the performance left something to be desired.

The DN-01 had a 680cc V-Twin engine, which was not powerful enough for the sportbike class, and the design of the bike meant that it became increasingly tiring to drive at speed due to the effects of the wind.

Ultimately, it garnered the unfortunate nickname of “Do Not Order One”, which few people did given that its initial price was over £12,000.

Many things can prompt someone to take a motorcycle course in London , not least the convenience of being able to get around and dodge heavy traffic. But there is also the wider appeal of motorcycles, often increased by seeing some vintage models in action.

Britain certainly has a great tradition of motorcycle manufacturing, with some wonderful models emerging down the years. Many people have had a chance to see some of them close up at Hastings Week 2024 .

The primary element of the week is to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, just outside the town at Battle, in 1066. But it is not just about King Harold and William the Conqueror; there is some more modern history of the motorised variety to enjoy as well.

A feature of the event is the classic cars and motorbikes show , which took over the Stade Open Space again this year.

This is to be followed at the end of the week with the 15th Sprat and Wrinkle Run event on October 20th, a rally of vintage vehicles travelling from Sevenoaks to Hastings, run by the London and South East area branch of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society.

The annual event will provide lots of interest for those interested in old cars and bikes alike, with those keen on the latter getting a chance to see how some of the older technology worked.

Hastings Week has not been the only time this month when vintage motorcycles have been on display, with several models going under the hammer at the Charterhouse auction in Yeovil, Somerset on October 3rd.

Wetter roads are a problem, not because it always rains that much more than in summer, but because it won’t evaporate fast without warm sun. Also, this time of year can see some severe storms, which means not just rain but also lots of other wind-blown debris on the road, including fallen branches and occasionally other objects.

Falling leaves can also make the road slippery and bring an extra hazard, as they might conceal other dangers beneath them, like spilled oil or something that can cause a puncture.

Wet weather also means you should make sure you should wear good waterproofs. Nor is this the only important clothing, as you will need to wrap up warmly as the temperature drops.

The declining light levels are another issue to address, which is why you should get some high-vis gear to ensure you are seen more easily, especially by motorists but also pedestrians and cyclists. This will be especially important after the clocks go back on October 27th.

By being well-prepared and alert on your bike this autumn and into winter, you will be a better rider for it.

Tunnel Charge Discounts An Incentive For Motorbikes

There are many good reasons to take motorbike lessons in London , with this offering a more mobile and flexible way of getting around than cars, as well as enabling you to go to all the places public transport does not visit.

A particular advantage is that of cost, not least when it comes to the vehicle charges that leave many motorists fuming almost as much as the high-emission vehicle use congestion charging zones and ULEZ are designed to curb. Motorbikes are exempt from congestion charges , though not ULEZ. Even so, the former still saves riders plenty of cash.

Proposed charges for the Blackwall and Silvertown Tunnels, which will pay for the £2.2 billion construction of the latter (Blackwall is currently free to use), are set to see much higher charges for cars than bikes.

Although motorcyclists and car drivers alike would pay £1.50 to use the tunnels off-peak (6 AM to 10 PM) and the tunnels will be free for all between 10 PM and 6 AM, during the peak hours (6-10 AM northbound and 4-7 PM southbound) cars will pay £4 and motorcyclists only £2.50.

As the end date for the public consultation on the plans (September 3rd) arrived, mayor Sadiq Khan insisted that the tolls would go ahead, telling the Evening Standard that he supported the principle of his predecessor Boris Johnson “that the cost of the tunnel be paid for by users”.

This could mean some car drivers paying up to £40 a week to use a river crossing that has been free since it opened in 1897.

While this is not ideal for motorcyclists, it could certainly be worse, and those doing their sums may agree that it makes a lot of financial sense to use a motorbike instead of being car-reliant in London.

The Motorcycle Too Far Ahead Of Its Time

When opting to learn to ride a motorcycle at a suitable driving school , the choice of bike is essential to ensure not only the safety of the rider but also to provide a solid set of learning principles that can be applied to practically every other bike.

An example of the type of bike that would be largely unsuitable for this was the Suzuki B-King , but it did not have to be this way. At one point the innovative high-performance bike was akin to the Mercedes S-Class in providing a signpost to the future.

The bike was first unveiled as a concept bike based on the Hayabusa, but even by concept bike standards the proposed set of features was extremely appealing.

It would not only be made from carbon fibre and exotic lightweight materials with futuristic (for 2001) styling but it would also be loaded with state-of-the-art features.

It would feature a helmet with a dedicated HUD that connected to the bike, providing telemetry, real-time weather and traffic updates using GPS and connections to mobile phone technology, as well as self-diagnostics to ensure it was running at top condition.

At one point there were plans to have the ignition use a thumbprint, although exactly how that would work if you needed to wear gloves whilst riding is anyone’s guess.

Many of these features have ended up being available as features on bikes, but at the time it was groundbreaking. The problem was that it did not stay that way.

The bike was meant to arrive in 2004 but it took three further years before the B-King was released, and it got worse when it did.

At some point, Suzuki was forced to abandon all of its promises, leaving a heavy, lower power, less-featured version of the Hayabusa, and all of the electronic concepts were abandoned entirely.

It had the huge exhaust pipes of a superbike but lacked the supercharger to live up to these promises.

There is an assumption that anyone who is learning at a motorcycle driving school will be riding a bike with a manual gearbox.

This means that as part of their learning and development, they will not only have to learn the basic mechanics of riding and the rules of the road but also how to manage the unintuitive mechanics of a clutch and sequential gearbox .

This is also true with cars, but whilst a growing proportion of four-wheeled vehicles are either automatics or have no gearboxes at all due to the rise in electric vehicles, very few motorcycles are the same, which might be the result of one of the most ambitious failures in recent motorbike history.

In the late 2000s, the biggest motorcycle manufacturer in the world had a bold new idea to change the industry forever; Honda wanted to bring automatic gearboxes to two wheels. Whilst Yamaha and Aprilla had automatic bikes as well, Honda had an ambitious plan.

Known as the Human Friendly Transmission , Honda had developed a continuous variable transmission (CVT) system that used a novel hydrostatic drive rather than the belt-driven systems commonly associated with scooters.

This meant that they could develop a CVT system that could act like a manual gearbox, and to showcase the system in the best possible light Honda developed the DN-01 , which was a mix between a scooter, a cruiser and a sportbike.

It was positioned as a jack-of-all-trades, and like most bikes that try to do too much at once, it ended up being a master of none of them

It was too heavy to be a sportbike, too uncomfortable for long rides to be a cruiser, and lacked the storage to be truly effective as a scooter, with a load capacity of just 147kg.

Whilst it could have potentially found a market in between the extremes, the asking price of over £10,000 was far too much to convince too many buyers and it was discontinued within two years.

The summer is a great time to head out on the road after finishing your motorcycle training , but it can be hard to enjoy the blue skies and beautiful countryside when you are sweltering in your leathers.

That is why it is essential to invest in appropriate summer gear so you can make the most of motorcycling during fine weather spells, when the ride is most enjoyable.

Firstly, swap your thick, heavy leather jackets for mesh cover-ups, as these are breathable while having solid material patches in areas where impact would be worst in an accident, such as shoulders, upper back and the outside of arms.

Non-key areas, such as the inside of the arms, have a mesh material instead, allowing air to circulate and, therefore, is much cooler.

It is also a good idea to get flip-front helmets, as these enable you to have some much-needed ventilation when stepping off the bike, as well as a good level of protection when riding. While open-face helmets also allow for ventilation, they leave the face exposed, putting it at risk of injury in an accident.

When it comes to trousers, you could wear riding jeans instead of leathers, as these won’t feel so stifling on a hot summer’s day. Make sure they have knee and hip armour, protecting these areas in case you come off your bike, and are also comfortable to sit down in for a long period of time.

Ben Clarke, who used them for two months and covered 1,000 miles in them, said: “They’re ideal for bumbling around on a summer’s day or nipping out to the shops and you can wear them off the bike without clomping and squeaking around and drawing attention to yourself.”

These lightweight boots are also much cooler than heavier biker boots, which is ideal for the warmer months.

Why ‘Ride To Work Day’ Has Become So Important In The UK

‘Ride to Work Day’ might have originally been an American campaign, but it has become popular worldwide over the last few years, as bikers aim to promote the presence of motorcycles on the road.

It originated in 1992, taking place on the third Monday in June. This year, however, it was held on Tuesday June 11th and, since the phenomenon has settled in the UK, it has been supported by the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG).

It was intended to encourage the use of motorcycles for transportation and increase other road users’ awareness of motorbikes.

MAG’s director of campaigns and political engagement said: “Riders in the UK have another opportunity to get to work on a motorcycle, but the work this year is about securing a flourishing future for motorcycling.”

By encouraging more riders to head out on their bikes on one day, this helps to create a big impression on car drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, who are often accused of ignoring bikers on the road.

Many riders see passing their motorcycling training as a way to provide them with a recreational skill, so they can enjoy using their motorbike for leisure purposes.

However, this means many bikers only use their vehicle for fun and clock up just a few miles every year.

Encouraging people to use their motorcycles to work could make it more common for bikers to commute on their two wheels. Having more motorbikes on the roads would, subsequently, force drivers to become more attentive to other road users.

“We’d all be safer on the roads if there were more of us and we were, therefore, a prominent and expected part of the transportation system,” the RevZilla blog states.

Why Summer Is The Best Season To Enjoy Your Motorbike

Summer is great for many reasons - barbecues in the garden, ice-creams on the beach, and lazy sunny afternoons in beer gardens to name just a few. However, for anyone who has completed their motorcycle training , it means weekends heading out on your bike.

Although you can hit the road all year round, with motorcycles able to withstand most weather conditions, it is undoubtedly the best time to enjoy a ride between spring and autumn.

There is no chance of snow and, as long as the weather plays ball, you shouldn’t have to face too many wind and rain storms.

The advantage of going on rides around the UK during the summer is that it is unlikely to get too hot. Riding when the mercury is in the 30s can be difficult, as you are likely to sweat more in leathers and become fatigued.

If the temperature exceeds 39C though, this is considered a “danger zone” for motorbike enthusiasts, as you could easily overheat, particularly wearing heavy protective clothing.

The excess heat can cause the rider to become confused and disoriented, which can be very dangerous when in control of a vehicle. They might also get headaches or feel sick, which can be difficult if they are on a long ride, far from home.

It is important, therefore, to avoid riding during heatwaves, and to stick to the cooler parts of the day if you want to head out on your bike. Make sure you bring plenty of water to avoid becoming dehydrated and choose riding gear that enables air to circulate around it while still offering protection during a fall.

Taking regular breaks is important in the summer as well, even if the temperature doesn’t feel that hot, so your body can have a rest from being in the sunlight and doesn’t get overly tired. It’s also a great excuse to find somewhere to stop for a refreshing drink or cooling ice-cream!

The Most Unconventional Production Motorcycles

The ingredients that make the best motorcycles for learner riders at a motorcycle driving school are familiarity, stability and controllable levels of speed, which does not just mean a small engine but easy manoeuvrability.

There are plenty of fantastic entry-level motorbikes available from manufacturers such as Honda, BMW, Suzuki and Triumph, but there are also quite a few models that are somewhat more left-field, to say the least.

This can be rather novel for expert riders but potentially very dangerous for a new rider, so with that in mind, here are some production bikes that have designs that can catch out a new rider.

Royal Enfield Taurus

Ostensibly, there is little that sets the Taurus apart from other bikes made by Royal Enfield, however, its biggest difference and selling point is the exact quality that makes it a nasty surprise for new riders and why it is no longer sold.

The Taurus was nicknamed “Bullet Diesel” because, unlike practically any other motorbike in history, it was powered by a diesel engine, marketing the bike in countries such as India on the back of exceptional fuel economy.

The problem is that a diesel engine is not as refined as a petrol one, which whilst merely noisy in a car causes quite violent rattles and vibrations that could cause trouble for an inexperienced rider, even if they are used to the petrol version of the same bike.

Yamaha WR450F 2-Trac

On four wheels, all-wheel-drive is all the rage as it helps provide superior grip and traction in more difficult conditions, but Yamaha wondered if it would work when the number of wheels was cut in half.

The Italian name Bimota still exists as a part of Kawasaki, but up until 1997, it was seen as a name on the rise as it transitioned from modifying existing bikes and creating motorcycles for other companies and breaking out on its own as a constructor.

It had a strong legacy as a manufacturer of chassis but was mindful of the inroads Japanese manufacturers such as Kawasaki and Yamaha were making in the sport bike market, and wanted to create a bike made completely on their own.

The result of this was the Bimota V Due, a 500cc two-stroke motorcycle made during a time when four-stroke engines were the standard in its class, but featuring a unique and very complex design.

Initially designed as a Grand Prix bike, the V Due was the first two-stroke bike to have electronic fuel injection, featuring a dry clutch, a six-speed cassette gearbox and forced lubrication to allow for greater fuel economy and reduced emissions.

The prototype models were well-regarded, but due to a lower budget and lack of appropriate parts, the bike was prone to oil leaks and intermittent power delivery, effectively making the bike unrideable and causing the entire first production run to be recalled.

This recall, the expense of failing to fix the issue with the fuel injection system and losing a major sponsor of the manufacturer’s racing team in 2000 combined to bankrupt the company, and whilst the name has continued to exist, it has struggled with financial instability for over two decades.

The engine was also too far forward, requiring a complex fuel pump that often worked too well, flooding the carburettor, which at low speeds tended to leave the engine stalled.

The Paso 906 replaced it in 1989, which used liquid cooling to fix many of the issues, but by this point, it was too late to save the name, although Ducati would continue to be one of the biggest names in the motorcycle world, particularly outside of Japan.

When choosing a motorcycle to learn on and to take to a driving school , there are a lot of different options manufactured and sold in several dozen countries, each of which brings unique characteristics, traits and traditions.

However, the vast majority of reliable, small-engined and easy-to-ride bikes are made by four main manufacturers collectively known as the Japanese Big Four.

These are:

Honda , who produced its first motorcycle in 1946.
Suzuki , who started making bikes in 1952.
Kawasaki , who started in 1954.
Yamaha , who started in 1955 after separating from its similarly famous music equipment business.

All four companies are vast conglomerates known for making a huge number of other products, including cars, off-road vehicles, boats and powered wheelchairs amongst many other motorised products.

The collective name “Big Four” not only highlights that they are the four biggest motorcycle manufacturers in Japan but also how collectively they managed to fundamentally change the market around the world.

Up until 1959, the largest manufacturers of motorcycles were either European or American, with Harley-Davidson, Triumph (as part of the BSA Group), DKW and NSU (both now part of Audi) all at one point being the largest bike producers in the world.

Honda became the largest motorcycle manufacturer in 1959 and has not relinquished that role since, with the other three following not long after.

Aspiring motorbike riders can expect to see some of the legends of the race track in February after two more big names were confirmed for the line-up of the 2024 Devitt Insurance MCN London Motorcycle Show at the Excel Centre.

Motorcycle News (MCN) reported that its Rider of the Year, Peter Hickman, is the latest star to be confirmed for the event. The 13-time TT winner will join fellow legend of the Isle of Man races John McGuinness at the show, alongside several other stars.

These include Eurosport commentator and two-time British Superbike champion James Whitham, adventurer Charlie Boorman, TV personality Henry Cole and engineer Allen Millyard.

While these special guests will be a key part of the show, those planning to start their own journey in the saddle by taking motorcycling lessons may be just as interested in the various new models on show, not to mention a wide array of accessories to check out and maybe even buy to wear once you have your own bike.

MCN Noted that while people have to pay to park cars at the show and there are limited spaces, those arriving on two wheels can do so for free, which is another reason for people to qualify as a motorcyclist.

The show takes place from February 16th to 18th and while it is one of the biggest annual events on the motorcycle enthusiasts’ calendar and arguably the most important in London, there are more to enjoy around the UK over the course of the year.

Indeed, last month saw Motorcycle Live taking place at the NEC near Birmingham with 90,000 in attendance, and the first details of next year’s show at the same venue have just been revealed .

The show will take place from November 16th-24th 2024 and organisers have promised it will be “even bigger and better”.

There is no doubt driving in London is not the easiest thing to do. The capital’s crowded streets and lack of parking mean that even with the Congestion Charging zone - not to mention ULEZ - driving around is time-consuming, awkward and costly.

Many would point to the extensive public transport network of trains, buses, the Tube and extras like the Croydon trams and DLR as alternatives, but these don’t go everywhere, won’t run all the time, are subject to delays and, this year in particular, affected by industrial action.

An obvious alternative would be to take motorbike lessons in London so that you can dodge the traffic on two wheels and travel where you like, when you like. Alternatively, you could try something a bit different - like riding a camel .

It might be one of the world’s more obvious statements to say that London is not exactly the Middle Eastern desert, so it was small wonder that residents of Chingford were astonished to see a woman leading one of the humped creatures along her street.

Predictably, the jokes about this being a handy way of dodging the ULEZ system were soon doing the rounds on social media, although it is always possible that the creature was being taken to - or from - a nativity play, rather than being used as a means of transport.

Needless to say, using a camel to get around London wouldn’t be the wisest move. It’s not the weather - they can cope with some very cold nights in the North African desert - but clearly they are not used to busy roads and not very fast either, with a maximum speed of 40 mph .

So while the sight of a ‘ship of the desert’ in Chingford certainly raised a few eyebrows, it is fair to say there won’t be many people taking camel riding lessons in London anytime soon. London is a city like no other in the UK when it comes to both its residential and daytime population, especially in its crowded inner areas. That means transport has always been a challenge.

Indeed, anyone looking for a good reason to take motorbike lessons in London only has to look at the levels of traffic, even after all the impacts of congestion charging and ULEZ have made their mark.

Some might argue that there are alternatives, with the capital enjoying the most comprehensive public transport network in the UK with its myriad of train lines plus, of course the Tube, Overground, Elizabeth line, the DLR and Croydon Trams.

However, the Tube is not just crowded, prone to delays and does not serve everywhere in the capital (especially south of the river); it is also a place where you may be at a growing risk of being a victim of crime .

Thefts on the Tube soared by 83 per cent between April and September this year, with overall crime on the network up by 56 per cent, Transport for London (TfL) data has revealed. This came despite an 11 per cent drop in passenger numbers.

Across the TfL network, crime was up by over 30 per cent, so people are evidently less safe on trains, trams and buses too.

Of course, being a motorbike rider does not make you immune to crime, but as a moving target, it will be a lot harder for someone to pick your pocket than if they are standing next to you in a crammed tube carriage.

Crime is far from the only public transport problem that has become more prominent of late, not least with so many rail strikes taking place.

While it may be hoped that train drivers union Aslef will follow the RMT in agreeing a new pay deal to end the industrial action, it is not just on the railways that passengers bear the brunt of such disputes; TfL has warned that strikes by RAPT Dev Transit bus drivers in west London will hit in the week before Christmas.

However, it was marketed as a performance motorcycle whilst delivering less power than much cheaper competitors.

The idea was that aerodynamics would counteract this loss of power, but the looks proved a point of contention and vibrations caused by the engine’s position caused a lot of buyers to be put off.

However, without its technological strides, the hyperbike would effectively not exist.

Kawasaki Zephyr

Whilst Kawasaki is a name mostly associated with bright green superbikes and has been for decades, the Zephyr from 1992 was a surprisingly unique model from the Japanese company in that it was a retro bike before the concept had truly solidified.

Whilst its styling and air-cooled engine were a distinct throwback, the wheels, brakes, clock and suspension springs were up to date, making it the best way for a relatively new rider to get a taste of classic machinery.

However, the 1990s were not a good time for celebrating the past, and the Zephyr, unfortunately, proved to be a pioneer in the worst way; it had the right idea at the wrong time, and everyone else capitalised on the future Kawasaki saw coming.

London’s roads may be the most congested in the UK, but the capital’s streets are not the worst by any means, according to new research.

Indeed, anyone hesitating about getting motorbike lessons in London might be surprised by the findings of a survey by car hire firm LeaseCar.uk.

The study checked out the best and worst regions of Britain to drive in, based on a range of criteria such as traffic levels, accident rates and potholes.

It is certainly true that London comes down towards the bottom of the list, particularly as it had the highest number of collisions at 23,139 in 2021, while its congestion problem goes without saying.

However, the south-east came below it and the worst place of all was the north-west, which had over 10,000 collisions, the second highest levels of congestion and the worst pothole record.

At the top of the list as the best places to drive were Wales, followed by the north-east and then Scotland. All these regions have their busy urban areas, but also large stretches of very rural land with uncongested roads.

While the study focused on car drivers, the fact is all these issues are relevant to motorcyclists too, who will benefit from better surfaces, greater safety and lower congestion.

Using London figures as a whole does not tell the entire story of road usage in the metropolis, of course; some areas are definitely better than others. For example, last year a survey by the Bill Plant Driving School found Islington had the most potholes per mile of road of any local authority in Britain.

However, that does not mean the whole of London is like that. Indeed, the second-worst borough was Kirklees in West Yorkshire.

So while London’s roads may have their challenges, it is clear that these are far from unique to the capital and in many respects the problems within the M25 are repeated in numerous places outside it.

Among the best reasons to take motorbike lessons in London is the fact that it is easier to get around the congested streets on two wheels. But it can also bring wider societal and environmental benefits as bikes have lower emissions than cars.

This point was made by road safety body IAM Roadsmart , which is campaigning for the government to do more to encourage people to ride motorbikes.

It has produced research showing that despite the benefits of lower emissions and reduced congestion, the British public remains largely unconvinced of the benefits of bikes, something the organisation wants to see change.

Just 22 per cent thought motorbikes had a positive impact on air quality and only 42 per cent acknowledged that they could cut congestion.

IAM Roadsmart stated that as bikes produce half the emissions of cars - or less - and that congestion could fall by 40 per cent if just ten per cent of car drivers switched to two wheels, there needs to be more awareness of the benefits of motorbikes, with the government adding support to help bring this about.

Director of policy and research at IAM Roadsmart Neil Greig said motorbikes had been “frustratingly” overlooked by policymakers, even though they “represent a huge opportunity in combatting poor air quality and congested roads.“

He added: “Indeed, their smaller size means that motorcyclists can safely filter through traffic, while smaller engines mean they produce less harmful emissions.”

The organisation raised the issue at the motorcycle Sector Ministerial Round Table on June 21st, an event hosted by the Department for Transport, so the message will have been heard by the government.

While the points made by IAM Roadsmart apply to the whole of the UK, London remains the most notorious place for congestion; A survey by global traffic analytics firm Inrix last year revealed London to be the most congested city in the world , with 156 hours a year lost to congestion per driver.

By comparison, Bristol was second in the UK with 91 hours lost and Manchester third with 84 hours.

What Was The World’s First Motorcycle?

The history of the motorcycle is surprisingly difficult to trace, in no small part because engineering historians often disagree about what counts as well as the somewhat complex process of dating when prototypes were dated.

What is absolutely known is that the origin point for the bikes ridden at any motorcycle driving school today can be traced back to one of three designs, all of which pre-date the Rover safety bicycle that would form the basis for everything that came afterwards.

There are two models of every early two-wheeled engine-powered transport that, if they count, were produced at least a decade before the model that inspired everything else.

A Question Of Dates

There are two main candidates, both of which used steam-powered engines and were built on velocipede frames , but there is considerable controversy surrounding which one was made first.

The first one that is known to be patented is the Michaux-Perreaux steam velocipede, patented on 26th December 1869 and built on his previously successful line of pedal “boneshaker” bikes, although some historians have claimed it dates as far back as 1867.

However, there is another, similar model made by Sylvester Roper that whilst never patented has a similar date range. The Smithsonian Institute dates it to 1869, but some have similarly claimed it was made as early as 1867.

This ambiguity has led to countless arguments, between those who claim Michaux-Perreaux’s patent overrides any alleged dates of the Roper machine and others who argue that given the existence of an 1868 model that it was the first.

There is a third option, however.

Some definitions claim that a motorcycle must have an internal combustion engine in order to count as such, which would strike the debate there and then.

Instead, the same year as the safety bicycle, the Daimler Reitwagen (sometimes known as the Einspur), which is the first to use a petrol internal combustion engine.

It is somewhat telling of the troubled legacy of a motorcycle that being marketed as having “pointless electronic ignition” is the least of its problems.

Suzuki is a very well-known name in motorbike circles, producing a wide variety of bikes from entry-level models perfect for practice in a motorcycle driving school to more famous and acclaimed superbikes such as the legendary Hayabusa .

However, no successful manufacturer has achieved perfection every time, and nowhere is this more evident than their trailblazing attempt to bring motocross and trail biking to the average rider, which ended up garnering the nickname “widowmaker”.

The bike in question was the Suzuki TM400 Cyclone , initially launched in 1971 in beautiful orange with a lavish ceremony hosted by a post-Star Trek but pre-TekWar William Shatner, features such as “pointless electronic ignition” and a promise that it has been built from the ground up as a dirt bike for everyone.

The problem was power and weight, or more specifically that the chassis and suspension could not handle the power it was given.

The result, one that typically emerged as soon as you take the Cyclone into what is supposed to be its home turf of bumpy terrain, dirt and gravel, was sudden, dangerous surges of torque once the bike is out of low rev ranges.

The result has often been described as akin to the kick of a mechanical bull, delivering power at the absolute worst times. It was the complete opposite of the experience most riders are looking for.

It sold amazingly well initially, bolstered by being ahead of the curve, capitalising on the huge popularity of motocross in the early 1970s and being astonishingly cheap for the power it had.

However, once the word spread, an entire cottage industry emerged trying to fix the bike’s many problems, leading to a sharp decline in sales before the model was discontinued in 1975.

Quite apart from all that, the suburban rail network of London will be impacted, as will journeys to and from the capital. Moreover, this is a long-running dispute, so there is every reason to think it may drag on for months yet, meaning more strikes and disruption will follow.

However, once you have your motorcycling wheels, you can still get around the capital without much difficulty even when the trains are idle and the stations empty.

The Most Ambitious Failed Motorcycle Model

Because motorcycles are typically simpler, lighter, cheaper and easier to manufacture than cars, you see a lot of ambitious and unique approaches to putting together two wheels, a pair of handlebars and an engine.

At one point, the future bikes that people riding out of a motorcycle driving school would be piloting were going to use a revolutionary engine design that did not use pistons but instead a complex triangular rotary mechanism that could in theory provide more power in a lighter, simpler design.

The Wankel rotary engine was seen as the future of motorcycle design right up until the moment Suzuki tried to release it to the general public in 1974.

Despite the near-decade of research and development that had gone into the new model, the Suzuki RE5 launched with an unusually generous warranty that promised a full engine replacement within 12,000 miles or 12 months of ownership.

This was ultimately an omen for the problems the RE5 would have during its short life.

Whilst theoretically a lot simpler, something that would be taken advantage of in the Mazda RX-7 sports car , trying to translate that compact power to a motorcycle became a very complicated exercise.

Wankel engines infamously run very hot, which meant that the RE-5 not only had huge ram-air scoops, it needed both oil and water cooling systems, as well as double-skinned exhaust pipes

to ensure that riders did not sear their legs whilst riding.

The carburettor was closer to that of a Mazda car than it was a conventional motorcycle, which meant it was heavier, more complex and less reliable, and contributed to the low power of the bike relative to its class.

Initial reviews were surprisingly positive, swayed by the novelty of the engine and the good handling of the bike relative to other Japanese bikes of the era.

Once the reliability issues became more apparent, the bike and rotary engine concept was seen as a disaster, and no other attempts have been made at a rotary bike since 1992.

We’ve all been waiting a long time for some spring sunshine, especially motorbikers who love nothing more than heading out on the road with bright blue skies on the horizon.

Thankfully, they have been able to do this over the last few days, with temperatures having risen during Britain’s ‘mini heatwave’ this week.

According to the Met Office, temperatures even hit 20.1C in the Scottish Highlands on Tuesday (April 18th), which would have felt positively boiling after the recent chilly conditions.

Being able to enjoy being on the motorbike in the sunshine not only makes the ride safer and more pleasant, but whole days out can be built around a leisurely ride. For instance, you could join friends in pub gardens as you traverse a route, making sure not to go over the limit, of course.

All riders, but especially those who have just passed their CBT in Chingford or anywhere else, need to be careful when on the road.

Riders with more than 80 micrograms per 100ml in their blood cannot get on their bike, and they will have to face serious penalties if they are found to be higher than the legal limit.

Understandably, it is hard to know when you have hit this amount, as it depends on the type of alcohol, your age, height and weight and even the time of day. .

Therefore, it is best to avoid drinking if you are not sure whether you would be over the limit, no matter how sunny it gets outside.

Learning to ride a motorcycle is much different to learning how to drive a car and many people may find it daunting. As with trying to learn anything new, there are many aspects of riding a motorcycle that can take you a while to get the hang of.

The Motorcycle That Led To A Gentleman’s Agreement

In 1999, a motorcycle was made that was so far in advance of any other, that all major manufacturers hastily agreed to end an escalating competition that could have had major ramifications for the motorcycle world as a whole.

Most motorbikes that learners ride at a motorcycle driving school focus on comfort, ease of use and safety over speed, but at one point, a major focus of motorcycle manufacturers was a century-long competition to find the fastest production bike in the world.

The first generation of the Suzuki Hayabusa GSX-1300R in 1999 was one of the last production motorcycles made without an electronic speed limiter, which allowed it to break the production speed record of the Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird by up to 14mph depending on the metrics used.

It featured innovative and sophisticated aerodynamics more reminiscent of a superbike alongside a ram air system and the largest displacement ever found in a sports bike.

Despite this, it was also shockingly easy to ride for its speed and it quickly not only found success in the self-imposed high-speed contest but also in terms of sales, leading Suzuki’s rivals to start developing alternatives.

Kawasaki had developed the Ninja ZX-12R that it was claiming would travel faster than 200mph, an unthinkable speed for a motorbike given that the production car record at the time was 221mph set by the McLaren F1.

This led to controversy and calls for high-speed motorcycles to be banned in order to avoid increasingly fast bikes from driving on public roads. This led to a mutual decision nicknamed the “ gentleman’s agreement ” to limit bikes to 186mph, ending the production bike speed contest.

Whilst there have been a few bikes to break the agreement in the two decades since, none managed to beat the original Hayabusa’s speed, making it likely to be the faster production motorcycle there will ever be.

If you were thinking about whether or not to take motorbike lessons in London, new research from Satnav firm TomTom will provide a particularly compelling reason to do so.

Being able to weave in and out of busy traffic is a good way of speeding up journeys when there is lots of congestion on the roads and while many overseas cities have a bad reputation for traffic jams, it seems London actually tops them all when it comes to having slow roads.

The TomTom Traffic Index revealed that the average speed vehicles moved across central London in 2022 was only about 14 kph (9 mph). At such times it takes around 40 minutes to make the six mile journey across the centre. Traffic is at its worst at rush hour on Thursday evenings, averaging just 13 kph.

This speed is the slowest for rush hour traffic of any city in the world. Every other city posted an average rush hour driving speed of at least 17 kph.

Overall, the survey found older cities with historic road networks tend to be slower, with other poor performers including Paris, Dublin, Rome, Manila and Bucharest. Most of the fastest traffic journeys were possible in younger American cities.

The situation was not as bad in London’s suburbs, where the city ranked 66th overall, but that is little use for those whose journeys involve entering the congested inner area.

London’s congested centre, combined with its very extensive public transport system, is why car ownership is low in many inner London areas.

The most recent survey of car ownership by the RAC foundation is over ten years old, but its most notable finding - that of the 348 English local authorities the 16 boroughs with the lowest car ownership were in London, is unlikely to be much different now, especially with new developments in public transport like the Elizabeth Line and Northern Line extension to Battersea Power Station.

However, going without a car does place constraints on where you can travel and how fast. A motorbike offers more flexibility - and more opportunities to dodge the traffic when it gets particularly busy.

In the world of cars, a transition from petrol or diesel-powered cars to more environmentally friendly electric cars is well underway, and a similar process is being seen with the vehicles that are taken to a motorcycle driving school .

However, in the 1970s, a pioneering bike engineer made the first ever production electric motorcycle, managed to make history with it and almost managed to change the future until factors well out of his control changed.

In 1973, a major oil crisis rocked the western automotive world, leading to a transition towards smaller cars and an era in American manufacturing known as the malaise era.

During this time a lot of electric vehicle manufacturers produced small, low-powered electric vehicles designed for small commutes, and Mike Corbin worked on something similar for the world of motorcycles, although his ambitions were far greater than a slow urban runaround.

Corbin-Gentry, his production company, produced its first electric bike in 1972. The XLP-1, known as the City Bike, was a relatively modest vehicle, with a top speed of roughly 30mph, a range of around 40 miles and batteries that could last 6000 miles before they needed replacing.

However, he had ambitions to improve his bikes quickly, creating his Magnificent Electrical Machine and becoming the first electric-powered vehicle to travel over 100mph on the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats, home to many of the world’s land speed records.

However, in collaboration with battery maker Yardney Electric, he would then create Quicksilver, a bike that set a land speed record for an electric bike at 171mph, a record that stood for 38 years.

The more modest XLP-1 also completed a staggering feat itself, climbing Mount Washington twice on one charge.

However, by the time the bikes were ready for more than limited production the oil crisis had ended and petrol was more affordable again. But his legacy lives on in the more modern lithium-ion powered electric bikes of today.

A city that is thinking of trying out such an idea is Barcelona, reports the English language paper Local ES . The head of the Spanish DGT traffic authority Pere Navarro has suggested the scheme, with the body noting that 86.3 per cent of traffic accidents involve motorbikes or scooters, despite other research showing they only account for ten per cent of vehicles.

He said: “We need to reflect and think about a possible redistribution of space to adapt to the new circumstances”.

In Barcelona, 33 per cent of vehicles are motorbikes and it is this high volume that could make such an experiment viable. If it can be shown to work, other Spanish cities may adopt the idea and that in turn could be copied elsewhere.

Indeed, the website noted, there are already some cities in Latin America with motorbike-only lanes.

The numbers of motorbikes compared with cars are lower in Britain, with DVLA figures showing that at the end of September 2022 there were 32,139,000 cars licensed in Britain, compared with 1,429,000 motorbikes.

Even so, just as more cycling lanes and dedicated cycle paths have encouraged more use of pedal power, so more motorcyclists could be encouraged by the growing provision of lanes to help them get around the capital swiftly and safely.

By the time most people hit their 30s, they don’t have many opportunities to learn new skills, but this doesn’t mean they can’t. In fact, we believe it is never too late to learn how to ride a motorbike!

This is certainly what Ron Williams believed, only starting motorcycle training after his 70th birthday.

Speaking with The Guardian , Mr Williams said: “People think of a 70-year-old as elderly. I thought ‘Right, well, I’ll try and knock that one on the head and do something that isn’t fully expected of an elderly gentleman’.”

In fact, it only took this ‘elderly gentleman’ five months to go for his test, passing on his second attempt. Not long after that, he took his very own bike on a road trip around Europe to visit his niece in the Netherlands.

He now rides on the famous Isle of Man TT course on ‘Mad Sunday’ every year, and enjoys the sense of freedom motorcycling brings.

Now he is 79 and approaching the next decade, he is showing no signs of slowing down. Not only does he go on regular adventures, but he is part of a “universal biking fraternity”.

With his 80th birthday coming next June, Ron might just take his motorcycling to the next level or pick up another new hobby. Indeed, living by the adage ‘Don’t let the old man in’ has served him well so far.
